《Study in Australia 2024 Report》

China Daily, May 13, May 12, EIC Education released the "Study in Australia 2024 Report", combined with Australian official data and EIC customer service data, to provide professional advice on study planning and application preparation in Australia.

Although there has been a downward trend in the new approval rate of international students in the past four years, the new approval rate of Chinese students in the higher education visa category reached 97.6% in the latest financial year, which is much higher than the overall level of international students (83.3%), due to the genuine intention of Chinese students to study and reliable family background. According to EIDR's customer service data, the number of inquiries about studying in Australia in 2023 increased by 81.05% year-on-year, already exceeding the level of the same period in 2019.

According to the official website of the Australian Department of Education, a total of 166,420 students from the Chinese mainland will study in Australia in 2023, ranking first among international students. New South Wales and Victoria accounted for almost 75 per cent of mainland Chinese students, followed by Queensland (12 per cent), South Australia and the ACT Canberra (5 per cent), Western Australia (3 per cent), Tasmania (1 per cent) and the Northern Territory with very few mainland Chinese students (0.2 per cent).

Australia has a total of 42 universities, in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, Australia's eight major universities all entered the world's top 100: the University of Melbourne ranked 14th in the world, becoming Australia's first ranked institution, Sydney University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney followed by the top 19 in the world, the Australian National University ranked 34th. In addition, the University of Technology Sydney is the ninth Australian university to enter the World's top 100 circle, ranking 90th.

According to the official website of the Australian Department of Education, higher education is still the main choice for mainland Chinese students to study in Australia, accounting for 74%, 142,520 mainland Chinese students enrolled in higher education courses, of which more than half are taught masters (74,200), and nearly four are undergraduate and honours bachelor (53,470). Doctoral degrees (6,240) accounted for 4%. Management and Business (55,043), Social and cultural (18,948), and information technology (16,673) are the top three subjects studied.

According to the data of EIC 2024, "Business and economics" (38.94%) is the most chosen field of study for international students in Australia, followed by "engineering" (24.34%), "humanities and social sciences" (21.24%) ranked third, and "science" (6.19%) ranked fourth. In terms of specialty segmentation, "Computer science" topped the list with 13.27%; In engineering, "Mechanical Engineering", "Civil/Environmental Engineering" and "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" are all listed. "Finance" (12.83 percent) was second, and "education" (8.41 percent) was third.

It is understood that Australia has a strong professional in science and engineering, including computer science and information systems, artificial intelligence, mechanical engineering, maritime engineering, petroleum engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mathematics, biological sciences and chemical engineering. In general, tuition fees for top-ranked universities and popular application directions are relatively high, while accommodation costs vary considerably from city to city. The annual tuition fee for studying in Australia is about 150,000 to 250,000 yuan, and the living expenses are between 100,000 and 150,000 yuan.

The National Work and Skills Council's Annual Jobs and Skills Report 2023 predicts that there will be about 2 million more Australians in employment in 2033 than there are today, with the fastest growth expected to be in "health care and social assistance", which will increase by 25.2 per cent. Professional, scientific and technical services, retail trade, construction, Education and training are also expected to grow in proportion.

According to the 2023 Report on the Employment Development of Overseas Talents jointly launched by Liepin and the China World Youth Summit, Australian universities occupy five of the top 20 overseas returnees who communicate most frequently with domestic enterprises, including the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales in Sydney, the University of Melbourne, the University of Queensland and Monash University. The employment recognition and popularity of Australian universities in the country is beyond doubt. From the perspective of enterprises' interest in overseas talents, the top several are still business and related majors, with finance ranking first, followed by business administration, economics and marketing. Computer science and technology ranked fifth.
